Moog Song Producer™
Robert Moog died the 21st of August at the age of 71 of a brain cancer. What can we say... not very nice news.. but... his company MoogMusic created in 1983 this wonderful thing called the Moog Song Producer™, and I cannot imagine anything with a higher coolness factor:Something for the Commodore 64 with the Moog logo.
There's not a lot of information about the Moog Song Producer™ on the net and the people who own one do not seem to waste time talking about it. The Song Producer is described as a realtime/stepmode hardware/software MIDI/drumsync color video-computer music system. Wow... got it yeah ?

The bundle consisted of a MIDI interface (one In, four Out, one Thru); Songstepper and MIDI Drum Songstepper, a pair of nearly identical drum sequencers; and a version of Dr. T's Keyboard Controlled Sequencer for the Moog MIDI interface. (Which is supposed to be a very cool MIDI sequencing program).
Combined with the sexy SX64, happy hunting !
and thanks for everything Bob!

Very nice blog, I must say. :) The Song Producer is a weird beast indeed. I've got one, and even with all the docs it's still weird to try to figure out what it's for. Yes it does MIDI, but it also has a row of 1/4" outputs for triggering really old style drum machines that needed a separate input for each drum sound - yeesh.
Even more interesting is an item mentioned in the docs that I'm not sure ever actually came out. It's an analog sound module that was supposed to be controllable from the Song Producer. How wild and infiniely cooler would that item have been? anyone ever see one?
BTW I may be totally wrong (and I wish that someone would correct me on this) I don't think that Dr. Moog was around when this item was produced. There was a period where he lost control of the name/company and I think that this was produced during that time. Not sure.

In the mid 90's I bought 293 Moog Song Producers at a bankruptcy auction. All but 3 were sold on Ebay by my partner. We also bought a semi load of parts for the professional line Moog produced. We sold them soon after the auction. They were componets like decals, volume controls and knobs (specials). They would be worth a fortune today for repairs.

I'm Ebaying mine as of today. Bought it a few years ago (from Don's partner?) but haven't done it justice.

I'm actually looking for a c64 to go with my song producer - kind of backward I guess. I'm really excited about the prospect of building a c64-based analog drum machine or something along those lines. It's a huge pain to find the manual online, though.
I'm mirroring a copy of the software here. If you've got a copy of the manual, please scan it and I'll host a PDF of it too.

I guess I'm enjoying the c64 more as a music machine itself. SID 4-evah. /Moppe
